Alessandro Leonardi's (1975) artistic practice is part of a family tradition that is both legacy and transcendence. Raised in an environment saturated with images and visual stimuli, between the works of his grandfather Arcangelo Leonardi and the intense production of his father Andrea Leonardi (Lean), the artist developed a sensitivity that is not limited to vision, but is configured as a tool for investigating reality. His journey began in 2019, independently and non-academically, marked by an original episode of an almost revelatory nature. Since then, his research has been structured as a constant dialogue between impulse and control, between expressive urgency and the need for synthesis. Leonardi works in a liminal territory, where figuration and abstraction interpenetrate without ever fully resolving into one another. His works do not describe: they evoke. They arise from visions, dreams, memories, and are configured as attempts to retain an experience before it vanishes. The pictorial gesture is rapid, direct, often instinctive. There is no room for prolonged analytical elaboration: the work is completed the very moment in which intuition takes shape. In this process, the breaking of spatial and representational conventions becomes a necessity, rather than a choice. A central element of his research is reduction: few formats, often intimate; few tools; few colors. Two- and three-color process become a language, a discipline that frees the image from the superfluous. Color, never mixed, is used in its purity as a direct trace of the emotional state. At the same time, the sign—often drawn with charcoal or wet charcoal, in a technique developed by the artist—introduces an unstable dimension, in which lines and boundaries appear and dissolve, suggesting rather than defining. The pictorial surface, often left visible, acts as an active element: the background is never neutral, but becomes a space of rupture, an opening towards a suspended dimension, removed from linear time. Leonardi's works thus occupy a perceptual threshold: not fully abstract, not strictly figurative, but deeply rooted in experience. A painting that seeks resonance rather than effect. After his first exhibitions in Rome in 2023 (Reclamatio Terra, Oltre ogni confine) and the solo exhibition Discorsi sensibili in Aosta the same year, the artist consolidated his presence with his participation in When They See Us (Milan, 2025), where he received the First Critics' Prize, and in The Body Language (Venice, 2026). His research, guided by an authentic and necessary impulse, takes the form of a practice of subtraction and intensity, aimed at conveying an idea of essential, fragile, and profoundly human beauty.
