copertina di kosmos

by Alice Salvatico

The underlying theme of the artist's early research is the desire to investigate one of the fundamental questions of existence: what is the origin of all things? Denisa Sufa focuses her attention on the similarities between ancient Western and Eastern cosmogonic myths and, in particular, on the cosmic egg that, when broken, will give life to the material world. More than the moment of hatching, the artist is interested in capturing the preceding instant, when the egg is laid, or the following moment, when time is divided from space which in turn is separated into air, water, earth and fire.

In addition to the strong references to the symbolism movement, Sufa also recalls the mimetic illusion of hyperrealism in his works. The result is scenes dominated by doves and swans with accurate details and anatomies, characters from myths and disguises, symbols that cover their material forms with white feathers. The light, pure and elegant birds soar in the sky, rise from the waters, cross a timeless place where together with the light they become co-protagonists of an initiatory journey towards the Absolute. The second fundamental element is in fact light, the generative principle of that vital spark that shapes the universe, reveals the depth of the sky and the harmonies of flight. Thus a synaesthetic experience is revealed that involves the sight that observes beams of light delineating the graceful dancing figures, the taste that allows you to taste the saltiness of the boiling primordial sea and the hearing that catches the song of the birds' tongue that only the most sensitive can understand. If man feels the need to order and classify nature to feel master of it, in Sufa's paintings this imperative is mitigated, forcing the spectator to confront the intermediary-bird with a divine aura.

The artist's paintings ask us to recognize that it is impossible to control creation or even think of being able to understand it in its entirety, since a part of it will always remain elusive. Western and rational culture must come to terms with the awareness that reality is not a mere scientific fact, but that it also has a mysterious component guided by invisible forces. What is then the origin of the cosmos? A ray of light. A flight. An image capable of crossing every border to reach the heart of every living being and broaden its horizons.
