“The greatest naval force they had ever seen on the open sea.”
It was a battle between Protestants and Catholics in the 16th-century conflict between the armies of Elizabeth I, the Protestant Queen of England, and Philip II, the Catholic King of Spain. “To the people of the time, the clash in the English Channel between the English and Spanish fleets was,” according to one book on the subject, “a war to the death between the forces of good and evil.” — The Defeat of the Spanish Armada.
I imagined Elizabeth I as a sort of inner strength, as a shield of the nation. Against the backdrop of the English fjords, the Invincible Armada approaches threateningly from the ocean, while below because she is “David against Goliath” Elizabeth I, in prayer, transforms her veil into a metaphorical act that, like a divine wave, overwhelms and sinks the enemy vessels. A vision between history and legend.
