Giuseppe Cannito, born in Bari, lives and works in Altamura. Since he was a child he has shown a passion for drawing and painting. His placement in the world of art is still uncertain, so much so that in 2000 he decides not to attend art schools, and enrolls in the technical institute of Altamura. His passion, that is art, will be put aside, but not definitively and in 2007 he will enroll in the Academy of Fine Arts of Bari, developing his pictorial skills and an ever-increasing interest in art. His artistic references will be painters, such as Edward Hopper, Caravaggio, Ralph Goings. His painting will be based on traditional academic rules, such as particular attention to the assembly of canvases, to painting understood as an expressive and courtly moment. His poetics leads him to create landscapes of the mind, intended as moments in which to immerse oneself to arouse unique and unrepeatable emotions, to be immortalized through pictorial exhibition. In his works we perceive ancestral memories and sensations that reflect fantastic places and spaces combined with a sensorial dimension to the absolutely most secret one of our soul. His brush strokes are delicate and vital, he prefers the creation of surreal and metaphysical spaces, so much so that he initially approaches what can resemble a De Chirico, but in an even more desert-like way, where the artist is looking for something that will perhaps lead him to his latest works. His pictorial vision will change when he dedicates himself to street art, with his portraits and caricatures, and to the creation of comics, in fact he will publish two comics with the titles "Federico II: An Emperor in Altamura" in 2015, and "Il Grande Sasso. History of Matera in comics" in 2019. In this change of perspective, his painting will be influenced, also by comics, cinema and pop culture, proposing as the theme of his latest paintings characters taken from video games, cartoons and more and will make them protagonists of the work, combining pure fun with important and considerable themes.
